Child Rights in Cotton Farming Areas of Sindh – IKEA I

“Promoting Child Rights in Cotton Farming Areas of Sindh (CRCF)” project focused on improving the quality of learning environment, building capacity of teachers and on bringing children from out-of-school in both formal and non-formal system of education. The ultimate objective of this project was to provide education opportunities to children in cotton farming areas using child-friendly education strategies.

Under this project, School Management Committees of 140 targeted schools, in 4 Union Councils of Khairpur namely Khanpur, Tando Masti, Shadi Shaheed and Babar Loi have been activated and oriented on “Child Friendly Education and School Improvement Plans”, 280 government school teachers from 140 targeted schools and 20 Learning Facilitators of Non-Formal Education Centers are trained to introduce them with child-friendly education approaches of teaching so that they can make their schools child-friendly.

20 Non-Formal Education Centers were established to provide education opportunities to children who are engaged in child labor, especially in cotton picking and are out-of-school or school dropouts through working with communities to encourage children to engage in learning processes. Thus the project, with active participation of the community members and coordination with government departments, took active measures towards improving education quality and access.

Key Outcomes:

  • Approximately 280 primary school teachers trained in interactive methods of teaching and non-violent disciplinary solutions.
  • 140 existing educational facilities in the target districts are child friendly and inclusive and provide “second chance education”.
  • Approximately 2500 Out Of School (OOS) children have access to formal / informal education.
  • Approximately 2500 girls/boys adolescents and elderly community members’ participants engaged in community mobilisation process.
